      • Book: AmigaOS 3.2 – The manual: A practical guide to the Amiga operating system for beginners, advanced users and professionals. “AmigaOS 3.2 – The manual” is the comprehensive reference book for the current Amiga operating system. The book presents the operating system from A to Z and provides tips and tricks for efficient use, explained simply and comprehensibly
      • Coding the anime "woosh" screen on Amiga: The Amiga was a spectacle of graphics and sound when it debuted in 1985. While it can trivially display colorful images like in the above example, doing so in the context of a game engine presents a lot of unique challenges. If you haven't seen the gameplay proof-of-concept video for Magicore Anomala, you can check it out here.
      • The Tech Behind Eon: Tooling!: Eon represents four years of work and during this we made several iterations to various tools and pipelines. I’ll save the 3D scene packer and track loader for separate posts, but this post will cover the other aspects of our pipeline.
      • Let's modify some drives.: The trick to getting PC drives to work with the Amiga is twofold: Get diskchange to pin 2 and ready to pin 34. Then jumper the drive as DS0.
      • Introducing Unijoysticle 2 A500: Unijoysticle 2 A500 is a device that enables Bluetooth gamepads and mice on the Commodore Amiga. It is similar in functionality to the Unijoysticle 2+, but with some additional features tailored for the Amiga, like: Fits in the Amiga 500 / 1200 joystick port without additional cables, New buttons: “mode” button: To easily cycle between “normal”, “mouse” and “enhanced” modes, “swap” button: To easily swap joystick ports. Useful in many scenarios, specially in the Amiga 4000 where the joystick ports are swapped. Additional LED for status: Tells whether Bluetooth pair is enabled, and in which gamepad mode is selected
      • How to configure Picasso96 for AmigaOS 3.x: How to configure Picasso96 for AmigaOS 3.x. Picasso96 is a Retargetable Graphics driver set for graphics cards for the Amiga. A popular make of card were the PicassoII and PicassoIV Zorro cards, hence the name.
      • AmigaNOS (KA9Q) TCP/IP configuration: TCP/IP through serial, between an Amiga 500 and Linux. AmigaNOS (or AmigaTCP or KA9Q) is as far as I know the only TCP/IP stack that works on Kickstart 1.3, besides Commodore's AS225 stack (and probably just it's r1 version), made for the A2065 Zorro-II Ethernet card for Amiga 2000/3000/4000. By the time the Internet became more widespread, Kickstart 2.0 was already out and the more advanced applications all use the capabilities of the newer OS. AmigaNOS is the port of the TCP/IP stack originally written by Phil Karn (callsign: KA9Q) and was intended for amateur packet radio users. As it's tiny and was written in C, it got ported to many systems. The Amiga port was done by John Heaton.
      • CD32WB - Workbench CD for CD32: I made a simple Workbench CD for the Amiga CD32, which can be used on an unexpanded machine. It needs no keyboard, can be used with only the joypad via an on screen keyboard. There are many game collection CDs available (some can even be used for listening .mods or watch .anims), but I missed the AmigaOS look'n'feel, so I made a system for myself. What can it do? You can listen to .mods, .sids, you can watch Amiga and scene related pictures, anims, try some games and demos, read documents (the complete AmigaDOS manual, the CD32 developer kit and many CD32 related articles from Aminet), you can browse other CDs, listen to audio CDs, and most of all, you can expand it to fit your needs, put your favourite games, demos, on it before you burn the iso, if you want.
      • Construction of a PCB in A4000: {A graphic if what the PCB board looks like along with the layers and how to repair an open circuit}
      • Retrotechtacular: Amiga Pips The PC For Mission-Critical Computing At NASA: In 1986, a group of NASA engineers faced a difficult choice in solving their data processing woes: continue tolerating the poor performance of PC architecture, or pony up the cash for exotic workstations. It turns out that the Commodore Amiga was an intriguing third choice, except for the fact that, paradoxically, it didn’t cost enough. Oh, and Apple wanted nothing to do with any of it.
      • BBoot boot loader: BBoot is a simple, minimal boot loader to load AmigaOS on QEMU emulated amigaone and pegasos2 machines. It is replacing amigaboot.of on pegasos2 and slb_v2 on amigaone and makes booting AmigaOS on QEMU simpler and without needing a fimrware ROM.

      • A Beginner's Guide to Amiga E: This Guide gives an introduction to the Amiga E programming language and, to some extent, programming in general.
      • Amiga & Windows cross-compilers for Linux (64-bit x86): Portabl E's r6 release allows (64-bit x86) Linux users to cross-compile Amiga & Windows executables using the PEGCC program. But for that to work you will need to have installed the relevant cross-compilers.
      • The Portabl E language & compiler: Portabl E is a recreation of the AmigaE programming language, along with many improvements, and the aim of being portable across different platforms.

      • % Most Influential Commodore Amiga Programs: Programs come and go. They’ll get updated, see revisions, and eventually may end up being discontinued entirely. And given how long Commodore Amiga has been around, there are plenty of programs that once saw the limelight on our favorite computer platform, but have since fallen out of favor. Lets take a trip down memory lane with these beloved but forgotten Commodore Amiga programs.
      • Modding the Amiga boot hand: {how to change the Amiga animated insert disk' image}
      • Amiga pixel art: I remember Amiga games looked pretty great back in the day. Some still do, if seen on real hardware. Pixel artists adapted their art for an environment with specific video out signal processing, CRT scanlines, gamma and ghosting. Using an emulator, certain scroll text movements, copper gradients, or frame flicker tricks will look harsh and skippy. The gamma might be way off, judging by the peculiar black-points I'm seeing coming out of a lot of emulated old hardware, in particular MAME.
      • Amiga HDD project: It was time to say hello to my dusty yellowed friend and see if I could open it up and salvage the HDD. Well, not quite what I expected to find. It's either 60 or 80 megabytes, Conner. Metal cradle looks clamped onto board, but I was able to just pull it out.
      • Amiga cleaning time: The midsummer night's sun beckoned -- "Take out your Amiga 500 and check for battery leak damage. Do it now." So I did.       - Greetings and salutations everyone! Quick update today. For everyone's enjoyment I just added a page that attempts to list *EVERY* Custom Amiga Chip and Chipset ever made. Behold the Big Old List of *EVERY* Custom Amiga Chip and Chipset Name I Could Find.

    Big Old List of Chips...

For some of the more obscure chips, such as MONICA, I could only find one or two bits of information. For others, like ECS, there were HUNDREDS.

And YES I KNOW THERE ARE ERRORS!!

But fortunately to the right of every entry is a comment button. I will be more than happy to update this WORK IN PROGRESS. Enjoy!

This disappeared from Amiga packs, and was not replaced by Commodore. At the same time, a new type of program appeared. AMOS was BASIC-based, but utilised the Amiga’s own custom hardware to provide a programming language which was not only easy to learn and understand, but extremely powerful too. AMOS has come to be accepted as the Amiga’s ‘standard’ BASIC. Although it can be used to program just about any application under the sun, its main strength (and the reason for its huge popularity) is its abilities as a games creator. The results can be stunning.

      • The Amiga: Meet Agnus, the Fastest, Mathiest Painter: Painting a reproduction from life is a challenge. At least, it is for me. It gets even harder when you’re trying to paint from life and combine in additional elements to the piece. It makes it even harder when you need to do this at least 30 times a second. It gets even harder when you’re a silicon chip and you can’t even hold a paintbrush! One of the great things about the custom chipset in the original Amigas (the Original Chip Set, or OCS, and the Enhanced Chip Set, or ECS) are the tools they have to do 2D graphics very, very well. Agnus, the controller of Chip RAM, comes equipped with a tool called a blitter, whose purpose is to copy big blocks of memory around in Chip RAM very quickly.
      • The Amiga: What the heck is NoFastMem?: The Amiga was a marvel of computing at release, with a custom set of processor chips that took over audio, video, and I/O from the CPU, allowing the computer to do so much more than other machines of the era. These custom chips - Agnus, Denise, and Paula - made the Amiga the Amiga, and when the Amiga first came out, all of the RAM in the machine was made accessible to them, to really show off the machine’s potential. The RAM these custom chips had access to was called Chip RAM, ‘cause the custom chip Agnus, and not the CPU, managed access to that memory. My first real computer, an Amiga 500, came with 512KB of Chip RAM. Back then, this was a lot, but, as with all things computers, memory needs steadily grew, and the 512KB it was released with in 1987 quickly became insufficient.
      • Amiga Copper Demo and Module Music Video: While researching a future post about the Copper functionality of the Amiga’s Agnus custom chip, I decided to really dig in and figure out how the Copper worked and how you would write some of the bare metal custom chip code. The process of making this video made me realize I need to do a few other posts before I can do one about the Copper, as there are a lot of prerequisites to understand it, at least at the level I am now able to understand it at. I also wanted to showcase a lot of the kind of music the Amiga was known for, module music made on music trackers.

      - Greetings and salutations everyone! Another small site update but the links are still coming! On the plus side it is nice to see the issues with AmiUpdate being addressed in a very timely manner. Thank you to everyone involved.

      - While the TABOR is still a mystery, recently Eldee Stephens (Eliyahu) updated his A1222 Guide. An ABSOLUTE MUST READ if you want to know virtually everything about the 'little computer that could'.

On that note I just checked and saw I placed my order back in 18 Jan 2020. Holy CRAP I can't believe I've been waiting over 4 years ago for this computer to ship. Other than the 'red box of goodies' that arrived over two years later on 31 Jan 2022, I have yet to received any other official word. I guess I just have to keep waiting 'two more weeks'...

      • A2320 "Amber" Reference: The A2320 is a video deinterlacer board originally designed for the A2000. It is essentially the motherboard deinterlacer circuitry from the A3000 on a board. Based on the Amber chip used in the A3000, the board is often referred to as the Amber board. Physically, the board is built to fit into the video slot of an A2000. Electronically, it works fine in an A4000.
      • Amiga Reference Books: This is a list of all known publications/books relating to the Commodore Amiga. This list has been created as a reference for the classicamiga project Amiga Reference Book Library Archive(ARBLA). The aim of this project is to create a central online resource of Amiga Reference Books/Manuals/Publications in PDF format. Once permission is granted for classicamiga to host each book in PDF format as part of the ARBLA project it will be scanned in and converted into a PDF version. A copyright/permission disclaimer from the original publisher/author of each publication will be included with each PDF before they can be allowed to be uploaded and published on ARBLA.

      • The Amiga Guru, ROM Wack & SAD: Almost everyone who has used an Amiga has seen the flashing red box on a black background, with some cryptic text, and known that whatever they were doing is now gone. This was shown when the computer experienced an error that it could not recover from (crashed to use the more common terminology), and the cryptic text gave an idea of what had gone wrong. Most people just pressed the left mouse button, which would then restart the machine, and go back to whatever they were doing, often cursing the guru.
      • You Can Now Bootstrap Your Amiga Without A Floppy With This One Weird Trick: Traditionally, most Amigas were intended to boot from a floppy disk. . An Amiga can readily make its own boot floppy, but only once it’s already booted up. If you don’t have a floppy ready to go, you’re out of luck, as PCs can’t readily make them for Amigas. [Roc] whipped up the amigaXfer bootstrapping method to solve this very problem.

First there’s Kodak’s PhotoCD system for storing pictures, and now along comes Commodore with CDTV. CDTV is interesting because it’s basically a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or this case, a computer in CD’s clothing.
      • Community: The AmigaOS community is one of the oldest and most dedicated. The loyalty of this community is one of the reasons that AmigaOS still exists today and continues to be actively supported and developed. Maybe a true winner emerges and has full control over the operating system... New Amiga systems that can run 3.x or 4.x right out of the box is produced... Or some rich philanthropist takes pity on us, buys everything, appoints a new CEO, steering committee, Chief of Hardware and Operating System design and FINALLY presents us with a road map to sanity and happiness with our little computer that could... ;-)

    Interesting... Keep an eye on

      • Tech Blog – Native GCC Pack: In the old good times installation of GCC compiler on Amiga was not an easy task. Now GCC Pack makes it easy with Installer script. It installs native (both hosted on and targetted to m68k-amigaos architecture) GCC 2.95.3. Then it integrates it with AmigaOS 3.2 NDK.
      • Amiga + Unix = AMIX : So, what is it? Well, according to lore, the Amiga engineers at Commodore were very interested in the Unix operating system(s), and wanted to bring it to their own machines. Unfortunately, the Motorola 68000 CPU in the Amiga was deemed insufficient, as it lacked the sophisticated MMU required. This, in turn, led to the creation by Commodore of the Amiga A2630 CPU accelerator which contained a 68030 processor and mmu. And this, in turn, led to the creation of the Amiga 2500UX, which is basically an Amiga 2000 with the aforementioned A2630 card and an A2091 SCSI hard drive card with a hard drive containing AMIX.
      • Attack of the Mouse Clones: Let me introduce you to the Commodore 1350, Commodore 1351, and the Commodore 1352, also known as the Amiga "Tank" Mouse. The big question: If you get handed one of these things, how do you tell them apart?
      • AmiSSL OpenSSL Cryptography and SSL/TSL Toolkit for Amiga: AmiSSL is a port of OpenSSL for AmigaOS. It is a shared library that allows developers to easily add SSL/TLS/HTTPS support to their applications or access cryptographic functions, without having to worry about all the ins and outs of porting OpenSSL, whilst also reducing bloat because all applications can share the same AmiSSL library. Starting with AmiSSL v5, OpenSSL 3.x even provides a built-in basic HTTP(S) client which makes it even easier for developers to read resources from the web without needing to worry about networking code.
      • No, the limits of HAM have not vanished!: We had already spoken in some detail about the Amiga’s HAM mode in an article a few months ago (sorry, it’s in Italian. But you can easily translate it with DeepL, Bing, Google, etc.), dissecting (especially from a technical point of view) all the problems that beset it and, therefore, the reasons why it was rarely used, relegating it mostly to displaying static images or movies/animations.
      • PiStorm and Emu68: Recently, theres a new project, fully open source that really has taken the classic Amiga to the next level. No, I’m not talking about the Vampire. I talking about PiStorm. PiStorm is an amazingly inexpensive piece of hardware that will take your 68000 Amiga to the next level.
      • Prelude Remake Zorro II Sound Card: The Prelude is a full length Zorro II 16bit sound card. It contains a 2K FIFO Cache, and a CSSC 4231A sound processor capable of playing ALaw, uLaw, 8bit, 16bit ADCPM encodings. The remake card gerbers have been made available via github. This includes all the files needed to send to a PCB manufacturer to have the blank boards made. I had mine made using JLCPCB. The cost was very reasonable and the quality of the boards is very good.
      • Amiga 2000 EATX: The Amiga 2000 EATX is a project by Jason Beer and is an open source Amiga 2000 PCB in the EATX form factor. EATX is an ATX variant that defines larger PCBs, measuring 12 x 13 inches (305 × 330 mm). These are referred to as Extended ATX, or, EATX. The length of Zorro II cards and the abundance of components on the Amiga 2000 makes EATX the best choice for this project.
      • A-Max II Plus by Readysoft: In the donation, I almost jumped out of my skin to find this Readysoft A-Max II Plus box. When I had my original Amiga 2000 system in the early 1990’s, I had one of these cards in my system. This card opened up an entire world of new software on the Amiga. Not only did you have the entire library of Amiga software, but the ENTIRE library of Macintosh software. I was even able to run AOL software for school research. Imagine that, running Mac software on an Amiga at full Mac speed!
      • Phase 5 – Cybervision 64/3D RTG: I recently picked up this RTG video card for my Amiga 2000 system. This makes a wonderful improvement to the A2000 video http://amigaworld.net/output. While surfing the internet, the webpages are displayed in their full color pallet. The only issue I have is that this card doesn’t support mode promotion.
      • Amiga Plipbox: What is it? Plipbox is an Arduino-based device that allows to connect low-end classic Amigas via Ethernet to your local network. It bridges IP traffic received via PLIP on the parallel port of the Amiga to the Ethernet port attached to the Arduino.

It supports 69 basic versions of Kickstart (support for new versions can be easily added) and your own 1 MB Kickstarts created with the Remus package. It was written in C using the free "Open Watcom 1.9" environment. Runs on Windows 95 or later (requires 386 or better processor).

Dear valued customers, We have received numerous inquiries regarding the appropriate Radeon driver to use and how to go about it. We understand that using AmigaOS 4.1 can be a bit challenging in this regard, so we would like to provide you with some helpful information to make the process easier. Please take a moment to read the linked article, which discusses the various versions of Radeon drivers and provides instructions on how to install them on AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition. It is crucial to carefully go through the article to ensure a smooth installation.
      • BassMX: description
As a bit of an audiophile, the one thing that has always bothered me a little is the Amiga's perfect channel separation, also sometimes known as "drums on one speaker and the bassline on the other". This can cause the sound to feel unbalanced. {...} So here is my solution, called "BassMX". It takes the audio from one channel, filters it so that only the low frequencies are kept and mixes that with the audio from the other channel. In short, it mixes the bass. And it does that for both channels of course.

Unfortunately, manufacturers have neglected to include this feature in their extensions. The solution to this problem is the HDD LED adapter for the Amiga 1200, which provides 2 separate inputs. This allows the activity of, for example, hard drives or the PCMCIA port to be displayed using the original LED module on the Amiga panel.
      • The Amithlon Debacle is The tale of the X86 Amiga that Moved the Community: In the early 2000’s Haage & Partner commissioned 2 software engineers Bernd Meyer and Harold Frank. The goal was to secure the survival of the Amiga from uncertain death on the X86 platform. What is Amithlon and how did it ended up being the biggest legal debacles of the Amiga scene? It’s a Linux and latter QNX kernel based emulator.       - Greetings and salutations everyone! Well it's finally 2024 and the Amiga is basically where we were last year. Still no A1222, OS4 is just creeping along, and no real changes in the legal situation. But despite this 68K development is still strong as ever! Raspberry Pi accelerators for the classics, the never-ending devotion of the many unpaid 3.x developers and a few all in one retro systems on the horizon (Vampire, A600GS, RetroGames new stand alone system and more. So rather than being depressed I'm looking forward to the new year!

Meanwhile, me (lotharek), as opposite side, was into simple usage, ergonomy and user friendly interface. After 5 long years of develomennt, many protototypes, hours of discussions/testing, thousands of euros spent (obviously...) we are very happy to announce, that final project is coming and it is about to be released in preorder for retro community soon.

While for having cross-compiler at all there is very good reassons: speed and ability to use all range of helpfull tools such as cmakes, autoconf and scripting languages, but for having updated cross-compiler there is even more reasson: ability to use c++XX till c++17, thread support in c++XX, bugfixes (and new bugs, of course:) ) and all the fancy stuff which come with new gcc.
      • Welcome to Capitoline: At it’s core Capitoline (Cap) is an Amiga kickstart editor, but like any software project, it’s grown arms and legs, added features which may or may not be useful to everybody. Main features: You can load ROMs in various different formats, decrypt, extract from ADF etc. Once loaded you can take a ROM apart, “ROMSplit” into modules then you can put a new ROM together “add” from these modules or other ROMs and ADFs. You can patch ROMs to change text or behaviour. You can save ROMs for burning to EPROMs (byteswap, interleave, split). You can create skick files for softloading Kickstarts or use within WHDLoad {and much more}

However, the Amiga is a nice computer, and if it crashes it will try to do that as neatly as possible. You are usually (!) allowed to save any important files, and when the Amiga goes down it will give you a last message, trying to tell you what went wrong. Many programmers have not realized how important that last message is. For them, it is just a collection of strange numbers. But those numbers can actually tell you what exactly went wrong, and once you know what went wrong, it is usually no problem to find the bug.

Sadly, I fell victim to the same false advertising as many when I purchased this board from a popular Chinese retail online store. The GBS8200 was attractively-priced at around 20 EUR, not including tax and shipping. In this article, we'll explore what this converter board can and cannot do, and my updates to successfully get it working on a retro PC.
      • 15 kHz CRT Monitors: If you are a dabbler in DOS gaming and prefer to use a CRT instead of a modern "flat panel" LCD/LED, you might be looking for a good all-rounder CRT that supports the full frequency range employed by Hercules, CGA, EGA, VGA and SVGA. In addition, these monitors will also support both digital and analogue RGB inputs, since all PC video standards prior to VGA were digital.
      • Jay Miner Interview: The 1992 AUI interview with Jay Miner has become an important artifact to understand the pre-Commodore era of the Amiga, and learn about the development of the Lorraine prototype. However, it was not the first time the magazine had interviewed the man behind the machine- Jay had also gave the magazine an exclusive interview four years previous. At this point in time he was still bitter about the decisions made by Commodore and the direction that they took the Amiga. The interview is scanned from the June 1988 issue of Amiga User International and saved in JPEG format. Hopefully the former publishers will not mind it being distributed to a wider audience.

      • Commodore-Amiga Sales Figures: Information on the sales of the Amiga throughout the world may be lacking in many respects. However, there are some figures available that indicate how many were sold during the Commodore era. These only show official figures, the number of Amigas world-wide has been estimated to be 4 times as much.

      • Fantastic animation: "Dance of the Stumblers" (Steve Segal, 1987): t doesn't happen too often that one stumbles [pun!] upon Amiga material from 1987, and is genuinely surprised. "Dance of the Stumblers" is a staggeringly beautiful, dynamic Amiga-generated animation that just has to be seen.

      • Setting up a Compact Flash card with Classic Workbench and WHDLoad for Amiga 600/1200 : About a year ago, I bought an Amiga 600. It did not have a hard drive, but all Amiga 600 have an IDE port, and you can use a Compact Flash card with a CF-IDE adapter as a hard drive. That worked fine, and I could install Workbench on the CF card, and use it. But eventually I though I should try to use WHDLoad, so that I could run more games directly from the hard drive.
      • F2R16 - HN62402/27C400 ROM emulator - Amiga Kick: Flash-based HN62402 ROM and 27C400 EPROM emulator for vintage computers and arcade machines. The Amiga, like many other computers of the late 80s, uses 16-bit wide mask ROMs to store the machine firmware. Unfortunately, the pinout of these ROMs is incompatible with the JEDEC defined EPROM pinout. F2R16 brings all the benefits of modern flash memory technology to any platform designed to use these obsolete devices.
      • Hyperion Teases Amiga Community: People, this is an interesting thing to follow first-hand. Hyperion, the company behind AmigaOS4, has been talking about its “Most Ambitious Project” for a while now, but on December 31, they started teasing the Amiga community like crazy. They opened a site called a-eon.com, which is most likely about the MAP.

      • Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 for Amiga OS4: So, I think I blogged about Stratagus a long time ago. It was an RTS engine that was ported to Amiga OS4 (and possibly 3.x as well). Using some addons, called Stargus, Amiga users could play Starcraft 1. It’s been around for a while but there is something called Wargus for Stratagus that makes Warcraft 2 available for Stratagus.
      • CrowPi Lite laptop running Amikit 12, MIDI and real Amiga floppy disks: Recently I found out about a Raspberry Pi laptop solution called CrowPi Lite. I have seen plenty of these solutions in the past, but they were never truly mobile solutions - but this one is different. I decided to get one, and get it working with AmiKit 12, with MIDI hardware support and even using real Amiga floppies via drawbridge usb floppy drives! Keep reading for more details!
